Summary

  • “Hell” Mode has been added to Onimusha: Warlords in a free update.
  • The new extreme difficulty setting means any attack is instant death.
  • The update also added support for six new text display languages.

Capcom has released a free update for the Onimusha: Warlords remaster, and players are being treated (or punished) to a new extreme difficulty mode that will surely bring out fans’ competitive side. Onimusha: Warlords was first released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, serving as the first entry in the greater Onimusha series, and the remaster followed nearly 20 years later in 2019. Set in the Sengoku period, Warlords’ premise hinges on samurai Samanosuke Akechi’s fight against Nobunaga Oda’s forces.

On the heels of Ubisoft’s success, Onimusha: Warlords is one of many games to play about feudal Japan if you liked Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Capcom’s franchise is growing considerably for modern gamers. Following Warlords’ path, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is getting a remaster, and a new game, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, was recently announced at The Game Awards 2024 event in December.

Game Rant speaks with Motohide Eshiro, who directed the original and remastered versions of Onimusha 2, about the series’ past, present, and future.

Onimusha: Warlords’ free update was confirmed to include a brand-new Hell difficulty from the Title Screen. Noted as being an “extremely difficult mode,” Capcom explained that this setting sees enemy attacks instantly kill players, no matter how light or heavy the attack. The developer clarified that a Talisman could be used to revive, and players can earn the “Hell” Honor by completing this mode. Additionally, the new update added new display languages, including Korean, Polish, and Latin American Spanish. The Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny remaster has already locked in a release date, and Capcom’s social media post also promoted the remaster as now available for pre-order.

Onimusha: Warlords Received Hell Mode Difficulty in Free Update

  • “Hell” Mode
  • Support for 6 additional text display languages
  • Minor feature improvements

A Capcom producer wishes for more Onimusha remasters in the future, and fans have one particular entry in mind. Gemma Onimusha was mentioned several times in response to the developer’s Hell Mode update, including the call for Genma content within a DLC, while others asked for a modern version of Onimusha 3 and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Another request that was mentioned repeatedly was the option to skip cutscenes, as players found it “annoying” to have to watch long scenes after getting defeated by a boss.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword debuted a new trailer near the start of the year, showcasing the upcoming title’s gameplay and brand-new protagonist modeled by movie star Toshiro Mifune. Scheduled for a 2026 release, Way of the Sword follows Musashi Miyamoto battling Genma in Edo-era Kyoto, and players can expect to navigate intense combat and make use of unique perks like the Oni gauntlet.
