Ubisoft Reportedly Working on New Game Like Apex Legends

Summary
- Ubisoft is reportedly developing a battle royale game inspired by Apex Legends, using similar characters and focusing on movement.
- Project Scout has been in development for at least two years, with no footage or release window confirmed.
- Ubisoft aims to capitalize on a perceived decline in Apex Legends’ popularity and hopes for success in the hero-based battle royale genre.
According to new reports, Ubisoft is developing a new battle royale game, one that appears to take inspiration from the popular title Apex Legends. Ubisoft has developed and maintained its own popular multiplayer titles over the years, including Rainbow Six Siege and the now defunct battle royale game Hyper Scape.
Publishers and game developers are always on the hunt for new twists to popular formulas that will resonate with players, and the now years old battle royale genre is no exception. Even while major titles like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone dominate the field, there still seems to be room for more. Games like PUBG and Hunt:Showdown excite players with their steep learning curves, while Fall Guys attracts players with its unique obstacle course framing.

Whenever It’s Time For a New Titanfall, Apex Legends Should Be Its Stepping Stone
Titanfall 3 may not be on the cards for a while, but if it does happen, Apex Legends should be the game’s most valuable stepping stone.
For its part, publisher Ubisoft seems to be betting that there’s space to compete with Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends, which launched its Season 24 update in February. According to a report from Insider Gaming, an in-development game project code-named “Scout” is in the works and is “heavily inspired” by Apex Legends. In fact, the report claims that it’s so heavily inspired by the first-person battle royale that at one point, developers used art from Apex Legends as a placeholder thumbnail image for the project.
Ubisoft Project Scout Is Reportedly a Battle Royale Similar to Apex Legends
The report on Project Scout said that the game has been in development for at least two years, but did not include any footage or assets from the game nor any indication of a release window or target platforms. Sources did say that the game was so close to Apex that its current playable roster features characters that are “very similar” to popular Apex Legends like Wraith, Lifeline, and Pathfinder. One source said that the goal of Project Scout is to “capitalize” on a perceived decline in the popularity of Apex Legends, along with confidence in Ubisoft leadership that there’s a chance for another hero-based battle royale game to succeed.
Based on the report, Ubisoft’s design for Project Scout could include a heavy emphasis on movement and agility. The source mentions Apex Legends character Wraith and her portals, as well as Pathfinder, who can navigate using zip lines and grappling hooks. If Project Scout has similar characters in its roster, mobility and movement gimmicks will likely be a major element of gameplay.
Despite research saying that many players are beginning to lose interest in battle royale games, it looks like the industry is set to debut at least a few more in the future. It’ll be up to time and luck to see if Ubisoft will see Project Scout become a rival to Apex Legends, whenever it does end up releasing.
