The Phantom X Appears on Steam, But There’s a Catch

Summary

  • Persona 5: The Phantom X listed on Steam, pending release in select regions with no confirmed date.
  • English and Japanese version update expected in May.
  • Game features expendable energy system, gacha summons.

Persona 5: The Phantom X has officially received a listing on Steam, but it’s the Chinese version of the title. So far, Persona 5: The Phantom X has only been made available in select regions, but the developer and publisher have promised its launch in additional areas and languages.

Persona 5: The Phantom X is a mobile and PC spin-off of the original Persona 5 game, which brings the player back to the Metaverse once again. Persona 5: The Phantom X shakes up the formula a bit to convert the game into an online free-to-play title, swapping the calendar system for a traditional expendable energy system that can be restored with time or currency, and introduces battle summons of the original Persona 5‘s Phantom Thieves through a gacha system. Interestingly enough, although the original Persona series originates and is set in Japan, the game has not yet launched in the country.

Even though Persona and Metaphor: ReFantazio aren’t part of the same series, there is one way the two franchises could collaborate with each other.

Persona 5: The Phantom X is now listed on Steam, but with some caveats. The game is not yet available to download, and doesn’t have a release date or window listed yet. This listing is for the Chinese-language PC version of the game. The listing indicates that the Chinese UI, subs, and audio are present, as well as a Japanese-voiced option. While Japan recently had beta tests for Persona 5: The Phantom X, this listing appears to be region-specific to China, at least for now. Atlus previously noted that Persona 5: The Phantom X should release in Japan in 2025, with more information to arrive in May. The Japanese version of the game might receive its own listing on Steam in advance of its release.

What About Persona 5: The Phantom X in English?

With Persona 5 being wildly popular in English-speaking regions, those fans have been eagerly asking about when they’ll get a chance to play the translated title. A recent broadcast noted that an “important announcement” regarding an English version would be shared in May. It was previously indicated that an English version would follow the Japanese launch, though there may be some wait. Localizing the game’s text will take time on its own, but it remains to be seen if the game will get an English-language dub, which could further delay its launch. While it sounds like hopeful players will get an answer soon, it’s fair to speculate that a western release for Persona 5: The Phantom X might not arrive until 2026.

From the sound of it, Persona 5: The Phantom X has a bright future ahead of it, with the developers taking the feedback of beta testers seriously. Persona 5: The Phantom X will also launch on game consoles following the completion of the PC versions, bringing the Persona Metaverse to all kinds of players.
