Prototype 3 Could Be in the Works

Summary

  • It’s been claimed that a new Prototype game may be in the works.
  • The new game is rumored to feature Alex Mercer and an open world New York.
  • Fans should take the Prototype 3 rumors with a grain of salt.

A new rumor making the rounds online suggests that Prototype 3 could be in the works. It’s been a whopping 13 years since Prototype 2 was first released, so fans shouldn’t hold their breath for the Prototype 3 rumors to be real. That being said, they are definitely interesting to consider.

The original Prototype game was released in 2009 and earned mostly positive reviews and strong sales. An open-world game, the original Prototype starred Alex Mercer, a shapeshifter that has to discover his origins all the while dealing with military forces and mutated creatures. Three years later, Prototype 2 hit store shelves. This time around, Mercer was the antagonist and a new character, James Heller, was made the main playable character. Prototype 2 wasn’t quite as popular as the original game, but there are still many fans who want to revisit the Prototype universe.

The Prototype Series Could Be Xbox’s Answer to Marvel’s Spider-Man

PlayStation has become a superhero powerhouse, but Xbox can tap Activision Blizzard’s Prototype series for its own AAA superhero franchise.

Unfortunately, a third Prototype game has not been announced to this date. That being said, a new rumor claims that Prototype 3 is in the works, though fans should certainly take the claims with a grain of salt. According to Reddit user Bigbyy, who claims to have been part of an Activision “study group,” Prototype 3 will allegedly see Alex Mercer back as the main character. This time around, Mercer will apparently be able to transform into other people “to infiltrate areas.” The post claims that the new Prototype game will once again be set in New York. Fans shouldn’t get their hopes up about this being real, but with Activision now under the Xbox umbrella, a Prototype revival seems more realistic now than before.

Prototype 3 is Rumored, But Take It With a Grain of Salt

There is some fan demand for a new Prototype game, but the question is if it’s enough to actually get the hypothetical project off the ground. While Prototype 2 sales were strong at first, the game ultimately did not meet expectations. This is what put the Prototype series on ice in the first place, and with it having been 13 years since the previous game came out, it’s hard to say if a Prototype 3 would sell enough to justify its existence.

Time will tell if a Prototype 3 ever materializes, but in the meantime, fans can easily revisit the first two games in the series. Both the first Prototype and its sequel are readily available on modern PlayStation and Xbox consoles thanks to their PS4 and Xbox One ports.

The same leaker also claimed to reveal Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 details. We will find out about the 2025 Call of Duty game within a matter of months, so if their claims about that title prove to be true, then Prototype fans can get more excited about the possibility of a third game in the dormant franchise.
