Just last week, Nintendo held its much-anticipated Switch 2 Direct where it divulged a flood of new and exciting information about the new console. From key features like the Joy-Con 2’s mouse mode and the GameChat “C” button, to a ton of exciting first and third-party games, like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Kirby Air Riders, and, perhaps the biggest surprise, a multiplayer FromSoftware exclusive called The Duskbloods.

Like the original Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2 will also offer physical games alongside their digital counterparts. While reactions to the Switch 2 Direct were largely positive, a bit of bad news shortly followed, as Nintendo’s digital and physical game price hikes came to light. Digital Switch 2 games will have gamers shelling out up to $80, ten dollars more than the most recent industry-wide price jump from $60 to $70 that occurred only a handful of years ago. On top of that, the Switch 2’s physical games are leaping even more in price, up to a feather-ruffling $90. Additionally, many Nintendo fans are upset at the news that some physical Switch 2 games will simply act as game keys that won’t have any data on them.

Nintendo fans are excited to bag the Switch 2 GameCube controller, but there’s a catch in the fine print that reveals a disappointing restriction.

Now, even more fascinating news has come out about the Switch 2’s physical games. Aside from turning Nintendo red, these new Switch 2 game cartridges will have a special coating made to taste unpleasant to the tongue, urging children and pets to spit them out immediately if they’re attempted to be chewed on or swallowed. Out of the big three console makers, Nintendo is the one that’s by far the most child-friendly in terms of the target audience of its first-party games and IP and its bubbly, fun style in general. Ironically, it’s also the one platform that features the smallest form of physical media in its SD card-sized game cartridges. This is nothing new for Nintendo, which has worked with physical media of all shapes and sizes, from its Game Boy ROM carts, to the GameCube’s miniDVDs, to the Nintendo DS Game Cards, which served as the precursor to the Switch’s cartridges. Thankfully, considering the small size of these carts, Nintendo is going the extra mile in making them as unappetizing as possible for kids and pets.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is gearing up for its June 5 launch, which is also the release date of the Forza Horizon-like open-world Mario Kart World, which is serving as the new console’s first big game. The console is priced at $450, with a Mario Kart World pack-in bundle costing $500. Nintendo is still eyeing a preorder date after the original date was pushed back as a result of the recent US tariffs.
