Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games Needs To Find A Healthy Balance
With past Switch games receiving enhanced Switch 2 Editions, Nintendo should be mindful of balancing new content between these game versions.
Since the announcement, there has been quite a bit of discourse in the community regarding physical editions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games and whether they would include a download code for the new content. In a new statement to Vooks, a representative from Nintendo clarified that these physical editions would be Switch 2 game cartridges that include the game and upgrade pack all on the same card. There’s no download code for Nintendo or Nintendo-published games included as they’re all on the same game card.
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games Won’t Have Download Code
However, Nintendo did warn that some publishers may not opt to go this route and could utilize a download code instead of a game card inside the physical packaging, perhaps like the upcoming Elden Ring Tarnished Edition. Part of the concern from fans over the potential inclusion of a download code instead of an actual game cart is that it prevents players from sharing, selling, or trading in the new game, and instead just leaves the original Switch version in its place.
So far, Nintendo has only revealed a handful of Switch 2 Edition games, alongside the fact that most original Switch games can still be played normally through backward compatibility. Including Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Switch 2 players can pick up enhanced versions of Super Mario Party Jamboree, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Pokemon Legends Z-A, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as well as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It’s worth noting that Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers can grab both Legend of Zelda Switch 2 upgrades completely for free, or $9.99 for everyone else.
