As part of the April 17 Mario Kart World Direct, Nintendo has revealed two new gameplay mechanics, Charge Jump and Rewind, that will be coming to the Mario Kart franchise for the first time. Mario Kart World includes a slew of new additions, and players can now get a closer look at how these new tricks will change the way racers compete in Mario Kart.

First revealed in the Nintendo Switch 2 trailer, Mario Kart World is the newest entry in the iconic Mario Kart franchise. The game will feature new modes, including Freeroam and Knockout, along with new playable characters, never-before-seen items, and unique outfits, vehicles, and more. Eight new Mario Kart World tracks appear during the new Nintendo Direct livestream, including a few unlockable courses from past games.

The Mario Kart World Direct has confirmed a number of never-before-seen features, including the new Charge Jump and Rewind abilities. Both of these new mechanics will allow players to customize their gameplay style in Mario Kart World, adding a new layer of strategy to the beloved Mario Kart game series. Nintendo has often introduced new mechanics with fresh Mario Kart entries, such as the gliders added in Mario Kart 7 and the anti-gravity ability first used in Mario Kart 8, and that pattern seems to be holding true with the latest innovations confirmed for Mario Kart World.

Charge Jump and Rewind Abilities Coming to Mario Kart World

The new Charge Jump technique in Mario Kart World can be performed by holding the drift button while driving in a straight line, building up a charge, and then releasing to launch into the air. Charge Jump can be used to complete rail grinds, Wall Rides, and even dodges to avoid shells and other attacks. Players can utilize the Charge Jump in any of the game modes in Mario Kart World, allowing for more tactical racing and expansive exploration.

Alongside the Charge Jump, Mario Kart World will also feature a brand-new Rewind ability. Players will be able to rewind time and position to correct course and re-attempt various jumps, maneuvers, and tricks while racing. However, the Rewind will only affect the player using the ability, meaning other racers will continue to progress onward. As such, players may want to be careful about how they use the Rewind during competition, though it could come in handy when practicing to determine the most efficient routes for each course in Mario Kart World.

From new gameplay mechanics like Charge Jump and Rewind to new characters and items in Mario Kart World, audiences have already begun voicing their enthusiasm for the next entry in the iconic racing franchise. Mario Kart World launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5.
