The surprise revival of the Marathon franchise was originally announced in May 2023. Apart from being the first extraction shooter in the long-dormant series, the upcoming title is also on course to become the first game that Bungie will release as a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment, who acquired it in July 2022 as part of a massive stock-and-cash deal valued at $3.6 billion at the time.

Bungie confirms more details about its upcoming Marathon extraction shooter, including the fact that it’s a paid game.
Just one month before the second anniversary of the game’s announcement, Bungie finally pulled back the curtain on Marathon earlier today, April 12. The Sony-owned studio showcased some brief—but fairly varied—gameplay footage, in addition to sharing a nine-minute animated short serving as an introduction to the game’s world. As part of the reveal, the developer introduced four Marathon classes—or “Runners,” in the game’s unapologetically cyberpunk jargon. The first-ever batch of playable characters consists of Blackbird, Glitch, Locus, and Void.
Marathon Reveals a Varied Hero Roster
The newly revealed characters are a motley group; each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses, thus naturally offering a distinctive playing style. Void and Blackbird are the more defensive-minded characters of the four, although not for the same reasons; Void is a fairly traditional stealth specialist who has multiple ways of getting out of trouble, including smoke grenades and an active camo suit. As such, Void naturally gravitates toward hit-and-run tactics. In contrast, Blackbird is less sneaky and more omniscient, on account of being able to scout enemy locations.

Those who prefer to charge enemies instead of maneuvering around them should feel right at home with Marathon‘s Locus, who seems to have fairly potent offensive abilities while falling short in other areas, which naturally leans toward an aggressive playstyle. The fourth and final Marathon class that Bungie revealed today is Glitch, a fast and nimble Runner who relies on her superior positioning to overcome opponents.
Bungie is still keeping some cards close to the chest, having just promised that two more classes will be available at launch. Both are likely to be detailed well before Marathon hits the store shelves on September 23. While it’s possible that all six classes will already be available during the upcoming Marathon closed alpha test, anyone who gets to play the game early will need to sign an NDA to do so, reducing the chance of character leaks.
