Marathon Price Teased by Bungie, Details Coming During the Summer

Summary

  • Marathon will be a “premium title,” but not a fully-priced game.
  • The extraction shooter will likely be priced in the $40 range, but fans will need to wait until summer to find out exactly how much it will cost.
  • Interested players can join the Closed Alpha test for Marathon from April 23 to May 4 via the title’s official Discord.

Bungie recently revealed that Marathon will be a “premium title,” but this does not mean it will be a fully-priced game. Marathon will be a first-person extraction shooter, rebooting the popular 90s franchise after many years. Gamers are curious to know more about the upcoming title, but Bungie will only reveal some information later in 2025.

The Marathon reboot was originally announced in 2023 during the PlayStation Showcase event, and not much information about the game was revealed until recently. Over the last few days, Bungie revealed Marathon’s gameplay and release date, indicating that the title will be out on September 23, 2025. The game will feature a bright, colorful art style and will pit players against each other in groups of three as they explore maps with deadly NPCs and face off against other gamers.

‘We Came Up Short, Please Don’t Punish Others for Our Mistakes’ Former Concord Dev Defends Marathon Amid Online Negativity

A former Concord artist speaks out against the Marathon backlash after Bungie officially revealed the upcoming first-person shooter.

Earlier this week, Wario64 posted a quote from Gamespot, which originally claimed that Marathon would be a “full-priced game,” implying that it would cost $70. This statement was soon corrected by Bungie, with the developer confirming that while Marathon will be sold as a “premium title,” not a free-to-play game, it will not cost full price. The developer also said that more details will be unveiled during the summer. Considering that other games published by Sony, such as Helldivers 2 and Concord, cost $40, Marathon may choose to do the same.

Marathon Will Be a ‘Premium’ Title, but Not Full-Priced

Bungie recently talked about how Marathon will compete with other popular extraction shooters. The game’s director, Zoe Ziegler, claimed that Marathon will not try to compete directly with Escape from Tarkov, for example, as offering the same experience would likely only keep players still engaged with the original game instead of trying a new one. The goal is to offer a unique experience that will be compelling enough for mainstream success and differ from other titles in the same genre in creative ways.

Unlike some similar games in the genre, for example, Marathon will not have proximity chat. According to the developers, this decision was made to create a safe environment for players, and proximity chat may only be added to the game if a solution is found after launch.

Gamers who are interested in the upcoming extraction shooter will have a great chance to try it in the next few weeks. Marathon will kick off its Closed Alpha testing soon, which will last from April 23 to May 4. Interested players should join the official Discord and apply to get a chance to participate.
