Marathon Has Bad News for Nintendo Fans

Summary
- Marathon won’t be on Switch 2, but the idea hasn’t been ruled out for the future.
- Speculations of Bungie’s games coming to Switch 2 sparked interest.
- The distinct style of Marathon makes it suitable for the Switch.
Marathon has confirmed it won’t be coming to the Switch 2, though the developer hasn’t entirely ruled out the possibility. Since Bungie revived interest in Marathon around the same time Nintendo announced its upcoming console, many fans speculated there might be a connection, hoping the company’s next AAA title would be among the first major third-party games on the platform.
One recent development that fueled these speculations was the rumor that Bungie’s Project Gummy Bears might be coming to the Switch. Back in February 2025, reports suggested the upcoming live-service MOBA was targeting the Switch as a launch platform. After the Switch 2 was revealed, fans began to speculate that Bungie was holding Project Gummy Bears for Nintendo’s next-gen console. Tying these theories together, many believed it was also possible that Marathon, Bungie’s other in-development multiplayer title, could make its way to the Switch 2.

Marathon Director Comments on Competing With Other Extraction Shooters
During a recent gameplay reveal of Marathon, Joe Ziegler commented on what makes Marathon different from other extraction shooters. Marathon is set to release in September of 2025. Additionally, there will be a closed alpha available to the U.S. and Canada which will open on April 23rd.
In an interview with Japanese outlet Famitsu, Marathon’s Game Director Joe Ziegler addressed the rumors about the game coming to the Switch 2. He stated that the team currently has no plans to expand Marathon’s supported platforms, confirming it will stick with PC and current-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Still, Ziegler left the door slightly open for Switch 2 fans, noting that the team will consider a port in the future. It wouldn’t be the first time a Sony-owned title has made its way to a Nintendo console; earlier in 2024, LEGO Horizon Adventures launched on the Switch and was well received by players.
Bungie’s Marathon Is a Perfect Game for the Switch 2
Since its initial reveal in 2023, Marathon has been praised for its distinct visual style. The game uses a fairly unique color palette and appears to steer clear of realistic, graphic imagery. In other words, it doesn’t look overly violent, making it a natural fit for the Nintendo ecosystem, which is known for its family-friendly, non-violent titles. So, it’s easy to see why Switch fans might be disappointed by the news of Marathon skipping the console.
Bungie previously called a Switch port for Destiny 2 unrealistic, and while the company has left the door open for Marathon on Nintendo’s next-gen console, a working port in the near future still seems unlikely. If Marathon isn’t already in development for the Switch, it could take at least a year or two to make it happen. A similar case was Rocket League, which launched its Switch version two years after its original 2015 release. For now, Marathon is set to launch in September 2025, which means a potential Switch port likely wouldn’t happen until late 2026 or even 2027—if it happens at all.
