Warhorse Studios co-founder and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 director Daniel Vavra has discussed the possible use of artificial intelligence in future games. The smash-hit ARPG launched earlier this year to an overwhelmingly positive reception from both fans and critics. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is the second installment of the series, following the original 2018 release, which was also a monster hit in its own right. Fresh on the success of the sequel, the director’s comments about AI in future games will no doubt be of great interest to many players currently battling it out in medieval Bohemia.

Post-launch, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has posted impressive player numbers, including smashing its concurrent player count record on Steam for six consecutive days. It peaked at over 250,000 players, making it one of the platform’s top 50 most popular games of all time. Now, the game’s director has spoken out about his thoughts on AI in the gaming industry.

The director lamented how long modern games take to make and expressed his feelings that AI could play a central role in speeding up this process, leading to quicker game releases in the future. Vavra noted, “I have more ideas than I have time,” emphasizing that AI could help developers get things done easier and faster, which could allow studios to turn more interesting concepts into fully fledged games.

AI could transform gaming in many ways, including giving more depth to NPCs and eliminating bugs. However, Vavra appears to be primarily focused on using the powerful tools in the AI arsenal for getting games through the development cycle faster, freeing up developers to move on to the next project and create more games without sacrificing quality. However, during the interview, Vavra did not delve into the possible negative consequences of more prevalent AI use in the gaming industry, namely the risk of job losses.

Recently, Google filed a patent related to QA testing that has the potential to eliminate the need for manual QA through the use of AI. If the company’s plans for this technology are realized, it would likely wipe out many QA testing jobs in the gaming industry. Vavra did not comment on how the use of AI in the development process would impact employment, but, as in many other industries, it would likely pose a steep challenge for job security.

While AI is unlikely to completely replace humans in the game development process, it could significantly reduce the number of jobs. Still, after the success of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, many fans would surely like to see more projects from the mind of the game’s director.
