Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Will Feature Multiplayer

Summary

  • Project Orion, the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, will include multiplayer elements, as indicated by job listings.
  • CDPR has been actively hiring for the game since 2024, with many job listings focusing on developers with multiplayer experience.
  • Despite multiplayer elements, Project Orion will still feature single-player gameplay, according to the newest listing.

A new job listing suggests that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 will feature multiplayer elements. Also known as Project Orion, the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is already being developed by CD Projekt Red at a studio in Boston, but not much is known about the game so far, including how it’ll change the gameplay of its predecessor.

Project Orion was first announced in 2022, and active development on the game started around 2024. The project is still in pre-production, so it’s hard to know specifics about the game, including when its story will be set, or how connected it’ll be to the previous title. One detail that is currently known about the project is that CDPR is still hiring for the game. Between October 2024 and February 2025, CD Projekt Red hired 57 developers, and 20 of them were allocated to work on Project Orion.

This overlooked character’s story hits harder than expected—especially when the credits roll and Night City doesn’t forget.

Even now, CDPR still seems to be hiring for Project Orion, and a recent job listing has indicated that the studio is looking for a Senior Gameplay Programmer to work on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. What makes the job listing stand out is that its description says that the developer’s responsibilities will include building and maintaining gameplay systems that can work both in single-player and multiplayer. When coupled with previous job listings where CDPR was looking for devs with multiplayer experience, this essentially guarantees that Project Orion will feature multiplayer elements.

CD Projekt Red Is Looking for Programmers With Multiplayer Experience for Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel

More proof that Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel could have a multiplayer mode appeared back in November 2024. At the time, CDPR was looking for a Senior Combat Designer, and the job posting revealed that it was “nice to have” experience with multiplayer games to be hired.

Back in August 2024, another job listing indicated that Project Orion could have multiplayer elements. At the time, the studio was looking for a Lead Network Programmer who could “spearhead the development of online functionalities for [the studio’s] upcoming project.” Neither of these previous job listings confirmed multiplayer, but the most recent one essentially guarantees that some multiplayer option is at least being planned for Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel.

Fortunately for gamers who love single-player RPGs, the job listing also indicated that, as expected, Project Orion will feature single-player gameplay, too. Last month, CDPR’s CEO, Michael Nowakowski, said that “cutting-edge single-player games” are not going anywhere. This will likely reassure gamers that CD Projekt Red will continue to develop single-player games, while it seems that some titles, such as the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, will give gamers the option to play with their friends, too.
