Civilization 7 Releases Major New Update

Summary

  • Civilization 7 update 1.2.0 adds one more turn feature to extend matches, while keeping the win status.
  • The major patch also introduces research queuing, teams multiplayer, and reduces natural disasters.

Strategists are celebrating after Firaxis Games released a major update for Civilization 7, which adds several helpful features to make gameplay a more enjoyable experience. Civilization 7 did not receive the warmest of welcomes after launch, being overshadowed by the likes of Manor Lords, Age of Empires, and even its predecessor, Civilization 6. However, update 1.2.0 is designed to make the sequel a contender again.

Civilization 7 launched back in February, and like previous entries in Sid Meier’s series, players are the overseers of human civilization, tasked with advancing culture and technology, for example. Civilization 7’s previous update added Quick Move, the new Bulgaria civ, leader Simón Bolívar, and additional UI updates, but the latest substantial patch is geared towards saving the sequel from its “mixed” rating limbo on Steam.

Civilization 7 has a long road ahead, and there’s one leaked DLC Civ that could hearken back to an underrated Sid Meier game.

Outlined in a Developer Update video on YouTube, one of the main takeaways from update 1.2.0 is the “one last turn” feature, which extends players’ matches while keeping a win status. The relentless natural disasters in the sequel have been a point of contention recently, but the update reduces these setbacks significantly, including a 50% reduction while playing on the “light” setting. The update also introduces research queuing, allowing players to choose the tech they want developed, and multiplayer teams. The developer previously promised two new leaders, four new civs, and four new world wonders would be added to the game between April and September, according to Civilization 7’s content roadmap, but the game’s latest update already goes above and beyond.

It’s no secret that the strategy sequel has struggled to impress the community, so much so that modders were hired by the studio to fix Civilization 7’s UI issues. Luckily, some Twitter users noted the game was “better” after the update, and appreciation was shared with the dev team for continuing their hard work to improve the game. However, most player feedback highlighted that the sequel should never have been released until the game was at this post-update standard.

Civilization 7 was one of the many games confirmed for the Nintendo Switch 2, revealed during the Japanese publisher’s extensive Direct showcase. Joining the strategy game, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Borderlands 4, NBA 2K, and more were also confirmed to be gracing the successor console. Nintendo also has new entries from its own franchises coming to the Switch 2, including Mario Kart World, the console’s launch title, and Kirby Air Riders, not to mention FromSoftware’s brand-new IP, The Duskbloods.
