The prequel title to 2013’s pioneering horror game Outlast, The Outlast Trials, will be receiving a terrifying new update on April 22, bringing plenty of new content for the bravest of gamers to sink their teeth into. The Outlast Trials’ previous update, patch 2.1, arrived back in March and brought a load of free cosmetics to gameplay, including a skin that resembles the infamous Zodiac killer.
First released in 2024, The Outlast Trials features a group of test subjects who are forced into a horrifying Cold-War experiment that players must survive and stay sane throughout. Having been significantly delayed from its original 2021 launch due to the pandemic, the game finally released its closed beta in 2022 and immediately received positive reviews. Furthermore, The Outlast Trials accidentally became a live-service title because of popular demand, as the original blueprint only had around four or five planned trials.

Outlast developer Red Barrels suffered an unfortunate cyberattack in late 2024, but luckily, no player information was taken. Since that troubling time, the developer has consistently impressed the horror community with its Outlast content, and fans’ reaction to Project Relapse is no different. One Twitter user praised the team for their stellar story setup, stating it was some of the best narrative content experienced in a multiplayer game, while others showed their concern for the character Amelia after watching the trailer.
The Outlast Trials carries some interesting similarities to Dead by Daylight, Behaviour Interactive’s asymmetrical survival game, but the title is acclaimed for carrying enough individuality in its trials to make it stand out in the genre. Teamwork is at the forefront of both titles, but The Outlast Trials relies on AI to operate the Killers, which could be a touchy subject in the current climate, but works in Outlast’s favor. The harrowing trials also give the player a first-person perspective, which makes gameplay much more realistic and promises to dial the upcoming update’s therapy themes up to nightmarish levels.
