Nintendo Already Struggling to Meet Switch 2 Demand in at Least 1 Country

Summary

  • Nintendo is struggling to meet Switch 2 demand in Japan due to overwhelming pre-order lottery sign-ups.
  • The My Nintendo Store set up a “lottery sale” for Switch 2 pre-orders to thwart scalpers.
  • Furukawa announced a second lottery for anyone who misses out on the initial Switch 2 pre-orders.

Nintendo is already having difficulty meeting customer demand for the Switch 2 in Japan. Anticipation for Nintendo’s next mainline console is building as gamers eagerly await the Switch 2’s June 5 release date, and many retail outlets are just now making pre-orders available. Pre-orders were delayed in America and Canada due to tariffs implemented by the Trump administration earlier this month, but Nintendo has since announced that they will now start on April 24 in those regions.

Meanwhile, Nintendo started accepting applications for Switch 2 pre-orders in Japan on April 2, shortly after revealing the console’s price and release date during a special Nintendo Direct. These pre-orders are given out in a lottery sale on the My Nintendo Store, with the utmost priority being Nintendo Switch Online members who have played more than 50 hours on the original Switch. This is to avoid scalpers snatching up Switch 2 units ahead of everyone else, but it seems that Nintendo is still facing supply issues for its newest console all the same.

Nintendo Switch 2 Allegedly Stolen From Manufacturing Factory

A Nintendo Switch 2 console is allegedly smuggled out of a manufacturing facility in China ahead of its official release date.

Earlier this week, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa announced that his company has seen an incredibly large number of applicants for the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order lottery in Japan. According to Furukawa, no less than 2.2 million people logged onto the My Nintendo Store, far more than Nintendo had expected and more than the number of Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered from the website on June 5. As such, a “significant” number of people won’t be selected for a Switch 2 when the lottery results are announced on April 24.

Nintendo is Struggling with Switch 2 Demand in Japan

As a consolation, Furukawa says that anyone who registered and didn’t get a Switch 2 pre-order will be automatically carried over to a second lottery, but this still isn’t a guarantee that they will end up with a console on launch day. Furukawa apologized to anyone inconvenienced by this unexpected Switch 2 shortage and promised that Nintendo is ramping up its production of the console to ensure that consumer demands are ultimately met.

While this latest Switch 2 news only pertains to Japan, it is a sign that Nintendo could run into similar supply and demand issues in other regions like North America when Switch 2 pre-orders go live. The My Nintendo Store will begin sending out invitations for Switch 2 pre-orders on May 8 in the US, while third-party retailers like Walmart and Best Buy will start accepting pre-orders at midnight Eastern time on April 24.
