Nightdive Wants to Remaster PS3 and Xbox 360 Games

Summary

  • Nightdive Studios is asking fans for suggestions on which Xbox 360/PS3 games to remaster.
  • The studio previously remastered Turok 3, Star Wars: Dark Forces, The Thing, Quake 2, and more.
  • Popular fan requests include the Riddick duology, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, The Darkness, and Yakuza: Dead Souls.

Nightdive Studios has asked its fans which PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games they’d like to see get the remaster treatment next. Considered industry specialists in remastering older games, Nightdive Studios has released a whopping eight games over 2023 and 2024 alone. Among them are remasters of Turok 3, Star Wars: Dark Forces, and 2002’s The Thing. Nightdive also collaborated with Bethesda’s id Software on remasters of Quake 2 and the first two Doom games. The studio is currently gearing up to release System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster in June.

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 being considered “retro” consoles is surely a tough pill to swallow for many gamers, especially those who grew up with those systems. Xbox 360 fans went through a heartbreak of their own last summer when Microsoft shuttered the 360 digital marketplace, sending game collectors scrambling to lock down digital games that were never brought forward to the Xbox One or Series X/S generations. Last year also saw a 360/PS3 remaster renaissance of sorts, with Capcom releasing Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster and Grasshopper Manufacture putting out remasters of popular character action games Lollipop Chainsaw and Shadows of the Damned.

The developer of the upcoming System Shock 2 Remaster 25th Anniversary Edition announces the release date of the sequel to 2023’s original remaster.

It seems Nightdive wants to keep the seventh-generation remaster wave going, as the studio took to Twitter asking fans which games from that era they’d like to see remastered next. Among the most popular requests were several old Starbreeze Studios games, like the Riddick duology, specifically Assault on Dark Athena, and the studio’s 2007 EA shooter The Darkness. Two Mistwalker RPGs, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, were also mentioned quite a bit by fans. Even Sega’s Yakuza: Dead Souls made it into Nightdive’s suggestion box.

Nightdive Studios Takes Xbox 360/PS3 Remaster Suggestions

Seeing that Nightdive mostly has experience remastering first and third-person shooters, The Darkness would be an absolute no-brainer. The Riddick games are looked back upon with much adoration by original Xbox and 360 fans, and would surely be home runs for Nightdive as well. As for the two JRPGs in Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, those seem a bit outside of Nightdive’s wheelhouse, though seeing that both IPs are still owned by Microsoft, it would be an easy collab for Nightdive, which has already worked closely with Xbox and Bethesda on Quake and Doom. As for Yakuza: Dead Souls, with Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio pumping out Like a Dragon games left and right, it would likely want to handle such a remaster itself.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is due out on June 26 for PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch. The studio also has Sin Reloaded awaiting a release window, which could potentially be out sometime later this year. With the team pumping out remasters so quickly, it shouldn’t be long until gamers learn about what’s next for Nightdive, 360/PS3-era or otherwise.
